Only Belleville residents using water directly from the Bay of Quinte have to worry about bad water caused by the blue-green algae bloom growing just off-shore, city officials said.

However, anyone using treated water from the city's water treatment plant or from a dug well do not need to worry, officials confirm.

“If you have a ground well, away from the shore, it is safe to use that water,” says Karen Poste, manager of economic development for the city of Belleville.

Any water coming from the shore is not safe to shower, drink or cook with, she says.

“Treatment plant and water from the municipal system is safe. We will be sending out notices immediately if this changes, but the chance of anything happening is very slim,” says Poste.

In the Bay of Quinte a bloom of blue-green algae floating on the surface appeared, making it unsafe to use. Algae usually sprouts when excessive amounts of the nutrients phosphorous and nitrogen.
